Connecting Generations Philosophy

The Leeza’s Place Connecting Generations Philosophy

There has been a literal "explosion" of interest in intergenerational programming during the last few years. Intergenerational programs are activities or programs that increase cooperation, interaction and exchange between any and all generations. It involves the sharing of skills, knowledge or experience between the young and old.

The Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation believes that nowhere is family legacy and generational continuity more relevant and respected than through the creative use of intergenerational programming. At Leeza's Place this powerful type of programming uses the principles of education, empowerment and energy throughout.

There are many common bonds and issues that tie all families and generations together. A recent poll of kids by Nickelodeon and Time magazine revealed that grandparents rank second behind parents in terms of the top three influences in their lives. If we are to improve the well being of our families, we must work together to build upon and strengthen intergenerational bonds.

Older persons can serve as resources and role models to children. They can help children explore and build necessary developmental skills for scholastic achievement and self-esteem. Children can serve as hopeful and spirited powers to older persons, allowing them to keep learning, loving and accepting. For young participants, intergenerational programs provide them with the opportunity to draw upon the knowledge and life experience of older individuals within the context of a non-threatening, non-judgmental relationship.

For both, intergenerational programs often improve participants’ ability to develop strong, caring relationships with the other generation. At Leeza's Place, intergenerational programs are powerful vehicles for:

»  Strengthening caregiver, children and parental relationships;
»  Expanding and maximizing scarce resources
»  Serving as a catalyst for change, acceptance and support
»  Improving the overall well being of families.

At Leeza’s Place the interaction of different age groups in a variety of situations at a level that provides close communication, sharing of ideas, and cooperative activity is intentional. This will be achieved through ongoing scheduled education and empowering activities including Leeza's Memory Television, Picture Yourself, scrapbooking, stamping and other creative arts programs. To energize families, the inclusion of as many generations as possible for events and social bonding activities is encouraged.
